Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea on Tuesday fired artillery into the sea near its tense western sea border with South Korea, injuring at least four South Korean soldiers and two civilians, the Yonhap news agency reported.
At least 200 rounds of artillery hit an inhabited South Korean island after the North started firing about 2:30 p.m. local time, Yonhap said.
South Korea's military responded with 80 rounds of artillery and deployed fighter jets to counter the fire, the report said.
The South Korean army also raised its alert condition, the report said.
Images of plumes of smoke were quickly broadcast on Yonhap television from the island of Yeonpyeong, but it was not immediately clear what the artillery had hit.
The island that was hit has a total of about 1,300 residents, a fisherman who lives on the island told Yonhap.
The South Korean government immediately called an emergency meeting of its security ministers.

The artillery attacks are a "totally justifiable act of self-defence" in response to the South's sea drills, an unofficial spokesman for North Korea has said, warning that nuclear war could follow "at any point" unless the exercises stop. Pyongyang has repeatedly issued such threats in the past.
"We repeatedly warned South Korea to stop its dangerous war games. If the South continues its dangerous behaviour, Seoul will be the next target. It will be a sea of fire. Nuclear war could start at any point," said Kim Myong-chol, executive director of the Centre for Korean-American Peace. He said it was fair to describe him as speaking on behalf of the North's government.
He added: "We have repeatedly warned the South to avoid endangering our territory on sea or air."

Sólo dicen que ahorita a las 9 de la mañana allá atacaron una isla en Korea del Sur, inhabilitaron toneladas de armería Sur Koreana y los del sur respondieron con 80 ](no me recuerdo qué putas) la mierda es que ya respondieron.

Estados Unidos apoya a los del Sur diciendo que no le ve razón lógica al ataque.

Korea del norte tiene ojibas nucleares armadas, aunque hayan dado la orden de desarmarlas, HUEVOS! que nadie lo hizo....
