That Old School Swagger: The Herrera’s Duo of Tough Chevys

When most people think of a car that has “stance” the image that typically comes to mind is a car that sits low to the ground, has ridiculous camber, and stretched tires. In some instances though, that is not the case. For example, take the builds of Eddie and Anthony Herrera, two brothers hailing from West Covina in Los Angeles.

The Herrera brothers have taken a bold step in the car-building scene by combining two very different styles of car modification. The two have both taken their classic 1967 American muscle cars and decide to have a more clean, stance-mindset rather than the typical heavy rake and drag race feel. Both have faced harsh scrutiny and hate from both sides of the car game, yet continue to build the cars despite the constant hassle they get. Eddie, the older brother, drives a red Camaro RS and Anthony a silver Chevelle Malibu.

The two have been surrounded by American muscle since their childhood and agree that their father’s influence has been extremely crucial in their involvement and deciding to purchase older cars.

Although their cars are not as gaudy as a large portion of the more popular cars in the stance scene, the Herrera brothers have made sure to keep elegance as a priority. Daily driving these cars that are more than 45 years old present many potential problems that typical car owners might normally take for granted. For Anthony and Eddie, having their cars start in the morning for work and school is considered a miracle in itself. The stress and frustration that come with driving older cars was not overlooked and continues to be a battle both brothers fight daily. What started out as a struggle has eventually turned into a joke, with “#oldcarproblems” often mentioned in their Instagram photos (you can follow their builds on Instagram @herrera_a and @herrera_e).

Lets shift our focus starting with Eddie and his Camaro. He bought his car in high school and has owned it for 8 years now; his love for muscle cars started at a young age thanks to his father. His father’s love for cars sparked the initial interest and dreams of one day following his footsteps of passion. When looking to buy his first car in high school, Eddie thought a muscle car would be an awe-inspiring car to drive to school in. Soon after buying his Camaro he realized keeping it clean and unharmed in the high school parking lot would be a much bigger challenge than he expected.

Planning to eventually perform a complete restoration on his ’67 Camaro RS, Eddie began to upgrade different parts of the car. In the time owning it, he has installed a full Hotchkis suspension, Classic Performance Products disk brakes, a set of Corbeau bucket seats, and a headlight relocation to the middle of the grill. The Camaro sits on a set of double staggered 2-piece Boze ZE4 Mesh wheels. Other than keeping the car running, Eddie’s plans for the car focus on eventually completing the restoration. When the time is right, he would love to swap in a LS motor, a new drive terrain, and look into a full air-ride suspension.

Following his older brother’s footsteps Anthony also decided to buy a 1967 Chevy muscle car in high school. After doing some research and looking around, he finally settled on an unmolested silver Chevelle Malibu. Anthony was dedicated to make his car stand out from the rest and maintain the cleanest look possible. In fact, he was so concerned with its well being that he refused to drive it to school in fear that his fellow students would possibly damage it. About five years have passed since he bought the Chevelle and much has changed.

Similar to Eddie’s Camaro build, Anthony has a straightforward mod list that is done with proper taste and mindset. Since the time Anthony bought the Malibu, He has been blessed with a car that likes to often break down at extremely inconvenient times, leading to a unhappy wallet and a frustrated owner. However, Anthony has made one extremely important and noticeable modification to his Chevelle: the timeless CCW Classics.

This is the constant topic of conversation with Anthony and his car as it is the biggest attention-getter. Anthony had his eye on the Classics for years and after saving almost every dollar he made finally decided to make the leap in spring of 2012. After weeks of waiting for his custom 18×8/18×9.5 Classics to be made, they finally arrived in the mail and Anthony was instantly in love.

The wheels are his pride and joy, and rightfully so. Aside from his wheels, Anthony has installed OPG lowering springs with hopes to someday install an airbag suspension. Much like Eddie, Anthony would love to pull out the 350 motor under the hood and replace it with an LS engine, along with a Hurst V-matic 2 floor shifter. Other than that, he loves to keep his car clean and his wheels cleaner.

On behalf of Eddie and Anthony, I think this whole process was an immense amount of fun. Over the span of three photoshoots (all with different types of weather) and minimal car issues, I think it turned out great. With assistance from good friends Stephen Berdahl and Jack Strutz (jackstrutz.com), the energy at every location was always high and positive.

I would personally like to thank Ethan Watson and the Canibeat crew for showing interest in my work and the Herrera brother’s car builds. Although it has taken some time to finally piece together, I am extremely happy of the outcome and proud of every aspect. I hope everyone enjoys the photos and respects the effort and time that Eddie and Anthony have sacrificed in order to make their cars stand apart from the rest.
